My interest in photography began in 1977 with a college elective that grew into a lifelong pursuit. Coming after an aimless childhood, photography gave me purpose and a clear direction that has never failed. The craft of photography, of creating images that express my emotions and inner feelings, is as important to me as the final image; the process from camera to print as a single, significant experience. My ultimate goal is the creation of images that accord with my inner vision and resonate with the subconscious of others. (Sometimes I like to make pictures for fun, too.)

My early work shows an exploratory vision, yet one that tried to find beauty in the commonplace. In recent years my eye has sharpened and my vision has become more acute as a result of family crisis. Themes of devastation and hope, fragility and endurance, chaos and order, the struggle to survive, and the battle between good and evil pervade my current efforts.

I typically get a short window where both inspriation and opportunity converge.  I shoot like a madman until that window closes, then go through a dormant period where all I can manage are random shots of this, or that.

www.dougburgess.com went online on June 12, 2008 and then sat unattended for 12 months because I'm hopelessly disorganized and easily distracted.

More of my photography can be found at this older site, www.people.virginia.edu/~edb9d
