This series of progressive portraits took place at the University of Virginia. The frist subject, Ranjan Kahn, was photographed in front of a poster from the Corbis Archive of actor Gael Garcia Bernal as photographed by Anthony Mandler . Successive portraits were photographed in front of a print of the previous subject, creating a linear relationship between the participants such that they were all linked, yet the relationship blurred as their distance from each other increased. The portraits were not planned or scheduled; since I had to generate a 16x22 inch print for use in each subsequent portrait, I could only photograph one person per day and I never knew who would the next subject would be. Although most are undergraduate students at UVA, their primary commonalities are the location (in front of my camera) and the photographer (me). The series consists of 24 images. Gaps in the sequence indicate images which have not yet been processed for the Web, or individuals who prefer not to have their pictures posted on the Internet. |
